Why can't I get Freedom of Press Light v. 3.0.1 to print to my StyleWriter/Personal LaserWriter in System 7?
Freedom of Press Light v. 3.0.1 was designed to be used with System 6.0.7 or earlier. Some of the neat features of "folderization" in System 7 do not cooperate with FOP light, somewhat to the chagrin of users.
After long discussions with the knowledgeable techs at Custom Applications, an easy to do fix was explained to me. I have had good success with it, and highly recommend this fix to those who wish to continue to have PostScript output to their "Quickdraw" printers until such a time as Custom Applications releases a 7 friendly version.
Process:
1) Install Freedom of Press with its installer, using the custom installation option (don't use the supplied LaserWriter extension).
2) Make sure to install the System 7 supplied LaserWriter extension.
3) Open TeachText, and save a blank document in the Freedom of Press folder {in the System folder} as header.ps. When the system asks you if you want to replace, click yes. (System 7's LaserWriter extension already has its own header. Adding FOP's header may result in errors.)
4) Quit Teach Text.
5) Make an alias of your StyleWriter/Personal LaserWriter extension, and put it in the System folder (not in the extensions folder).
6) Use your application's "print PS to disk" option, as outlined in the FOP manual, as well as the application's manual, saving the PostScript file to your hard disk.
7) Quit the originating program (or if you have the RAM, just choose Hide), then open Freedom of Press Light.
8) After launching FOP Light, just select the PostScript file, (make sure the printer is on), and choose the print option. If you've installed the alias properly, and you don't have any other "QuickDraw" printer extensions lagging around in the system folder, FOP will already have chosen the correct printer option.
Each subsequent time you want to print a PostScript file, just follow 6) through 8), and voilas! PostScript to your printer.
After lots of test pages from PageMaker, Freehand, Illustrator, and Quark, I've had fantastic results out of my StyleWriter!
